Why Food Storage?

The days of considering food storage only as an insurance policy against earthquakes or job loss are long gone. Here are some of the many ways food storage makes life better:

  1. Investment--With how the Fed is printing money, inflation, and plenty of it is coming our way. Food will never be cheaper. Buy some extra now and use it to offset inflation when things get tight. In fact, in times of economic collapse, food storage is one of the very best investments you can have. You can't eat gold after all. If you have some extra food on hand, you could barter it for something you forgot to stock (like say toilet paper) or sell it for an impressive ROI. To the hungry, food has immense value. Think about it.
  2. Time Savings--If you have a properly stocked food storage, it acts as a convenience store for you. Run out of some ingredient in the middle of a recipe, no problem, just go to your local (basement) convenience store. Perhaps you will even be able to space out those necessary, but time-consuming trips to the grocery store.
  3. Money Savings--Take advantage of those case lot sales. Out of options for dinner? Instead of pizza or an expensive run to the store, go get a can of chili and some hot dogs and save yourself a few bucks. The portion of your food storage that is raw will frequently be the cheapest form of food. To the extent you are able to use it in your daily menu, it will decrease the expense of your food.
  4. Nutrition--Did your Mother ever tell you that whole wheat bread was better for you than white? Well mine did. And, as it turns out, she was right! The latest food pyramid even acknowledges that "At least half of all the grains eaten should be whole grains." Whole wheat flour used commercially can be processed such that it alters its natural state. Not so with wheat you grind at home.
  5. Insurance-Ok, so this it the traditional purpose of food storage. It has never been more necessary than now. But, unlike car or homeowners insurance, it actually has intrinsic value to you. It doesn't actually cost you anything, since you will be buying food anyhow. Just rotate it through a stockpile in your home.
May you find peace in preparedness.
